An Ohio coach has been publicly smeared by her own college after she bravely took a stand to defend female athletes in womenโs sports.
56-year-old Kim Russell, the head womenโs lacrosse coach at Oberlin College, says she was โburned at the stakeโ for opposing โtransgenderโ biological males in womenโs sports.
Russell reportedly published a post on Instagram congratulating Emma Weyant for being the โreal winnerโ of the 500-yard freestyle at the NCAA championships last year.
Weyant came in second place to Will โLiaโ Thomas, the โtransgenderโ swimmer who claims to be a โwoman.โ
Thomas, a failed male swimmer, has been taking awards and opportunities from female athletes while making them feel uncomfortable in their own locker room.
According to the Independent Womenโs Forum, one of Russellโs own players reported her to the schoolโs athletic director.
โThe report triggered a series of lengthy disciplinary meetings and a full-fledged character assassination campaign against her involving Oberlin faculty and the womenโs lacrosse team,โ IWF noted.
Audio recordings show Oberlinโs associated vice president for athletics, Natalie Winkelfoos, telling Russell that โyou fall into a category of people that are filled with hate in the world.โ
Another staff member, Creg Jantz, the senior associate director of athletics, told Russell that โitโs acceptable to have your own opinions, but when they go against your collegeโs beliefs, itโs a problem.
โFor your employment.โ
As a result, the school told Russell that she needed to write a letter of apology to her team and to the athletic department for believing that a man who believes he is a woman is not a woman.
โI started to write on and then thought, โNo. Iโm not writing a letter of apology. Iโm not sorry,โโ she explained.
โI will have a conversation with anyone who wants to have a conversation about this.โ
โI really believe women should be competing against other biological females,โ she added.
The school then forced Russell to have a meeting with her whole team, the athletic director, the Title IX director for their department, the โDiversity, Equity, and Inclusionโ (DEI) staffer for their department, and the Title IX and diversity and inclusion director for the whole college.
โChairs were set up in a huge circle,โ she explained.
โI felt like I was burned at the stake. I felt like I was stoned and hanged all at the same time.
โIt was, what I would call, the mob mentality.
โThat meeting turned into anybody being able to say anything they didnโt like about my coaching style, or my assistantโs coaching, anything.โ
โI love these kids. And to have many of them say all these things that to me, were attacking who I was as a person andโฆ..it made me sad.โ
Audio recordings from the meeting show lacrosse players saying they want to see โaccountabilityโ for Russellโs post and bringing up issues like โwhite feminism.โ
โYour feminism has to be inclusive for everybody and work for everybody,โ one unnamed player said.
โI knew by the end of the meeting that it didnโt matter what I said,โ Russell said.
โThere was cognitive dissonance.
โNobody would hear me.โ
Once the season ended, she was handed a letter in a meeting stating that she โneeded to change [her] behavior immediately.โ
In recent years, several polls have shown that the majority of Americans oppose allowing biological males who identify as โtransgenderโ to compete in womenโs sports.
The latest Gallup poll on the issue, which was published in June, showed that more Americans now than in 2021 believe that males should not be on womenโs sports teams.
โEvery time Iโve spoken up, Iโve been silenced,โ Russell said.
โWhich, to me, is the opposite of what I thought Oberlin would be.
โI believe that there are so many people who are afraid of losing their jobs that are just going to do what they have to do to keep working.
โBut instead of difficult conversations, the students will go to a higher-up and not talk to a coach, a professor, whoever, and that coach is canceled, firedโฆbecause the kidsโ parents are paying the money and thatโs what matters.
โIt is scientific that biologically males and females are different, period.
โI donโt believe that biological males should be in womenโs locker rooms,โ Russell concluded.
โWhereโs the Me Too movement now?โ
