Vintage Treasures at the Junk Book Store – Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, Kuala Lumpur

By Sumiitra Yiohan Sooriaarratchi

For all you book enthusiasts out there; this place is sure to be a treat. Located on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee (formerly known as High Street) along the row of colonial-era shops opposite the Reggae Mansion backpacker hostel.

A bit like traveling through time …you’ll need to set-aside a few hours for your visit to the Junk Book Store because the place is stuffed with books from the floor to the ceiling. They also have magazines, tabloids, vinyl records, old music records and antiques for sale.  You won’t notice the the time pass by as you dig deeper into this treasure trove of books; some of the items are rare books that are difficult to find. An example of this is a series of books titled Great Ages of Man, published by Time-Life in 1971. A few of the books from this series had been in my family’s home library and were misplaced during numerous relocations. I was pleasantly surprised to find the series available here and in a good condition – at last I found the book on Greece that I enjoyed reading as a child.

Go down to the Junk Book Store and see what the Universe throws at you; who knows? It might even be something life-changing.

Great Ages of Man, published by Time-Life International in 1965, 1966 and 1971.  Classical Greece,  Ancient America,  Ancient Egypt,  Renaissance.
